Booze vs. Biceps: Can You Drink While Building Muscles?

Let’s be real, after following a strict diet all week and being consistent with the gym, you feel like grabbing a few drinks on the weekends. If you’re serious about your fitness and hard-earned gains, you might wonder, “Is it okay to drink occasionally when trying to build muscles?”

Read on to find out what alcohol is going to cost your physique.

How Alcohol Affects Your Muscles?

To answer your query simply, drinking alcohol does not diffuse your gains overnight but it can slowly decrease your progress if you’re not smart about your drinking habits.

So, occasional drinking is fine, but indulge too much and it will impact you in the following ways:

  • Negatively Affects Protein Synthesis: Studies have shown that the intake of alcohol suppresses the rate of protein synthesis. So, your weekend shots can make it difficult for you to build new muscles.
  • Drops Testosterone Levels: Multiple clinical trials have shown that heavy drinking reduces testosterone levels in the blood. Low testosterone levels can reduce muscle mass, strength, and stamina. If your t-levels are dipping, you can limit your alcohol intake and take natural foods like ashwagandha to maintain its level.
  • Increases Stress Hormone: Although alcohol has calming effects, it can also lead to cortisol spikes, raging emotions like anger, depression, or anxiety. Stress can break down muscles and jeopardise your gains.
  • May Lead to Beer Belly: The high caloric content of alcohol, particularly beer or sweetened cocktails can make it challenging to manage calories. Let’s not forget the snacks and late-night munchies with the round of drinks, adding more to your calorie intake.

The Fit Way to Drink

The best way to enjoy the weekends without losing your gains is all down to striking a balance. If you’ve been eating clean and working out regularly, then an occasional drink isn’t going to shrink your muscles. Just don’t make it an every-Friday ritual.

Remember these things:

  • Take only 1–2 drinks at max.
  • I prefer light liquors, such as vodka, red wine, or light beer.
  • Avoid boozing right after hitting the gym. Your body needs protein, not alcohol.

If you’ve been out of a booze habit and want to boost your muscle size and strength, you can take shilajit or fenugreek. These natural testosterone boosters help lower stress and enhance stamina.

Bottom Line

You can enjoy a couple of drinks while still building muscle, as long as you’re doing it in moderation. Avoid drinking every weekend as it can impact protein synthesis in your body. You should maintain balance, train hard, eat smart, drink responsibly, and your biceps will thank you later!
