Headache: What It Is, Types, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment

Headache

Headaches can occur in various locations around the head and have different characteristics depending on the type. Two common types of headache are those involving pain in back of head and various types of headache related to migraines or tension. This article explores causes, symptoms, and treatments for these kinds of head pain.

Pain in Back of Head

Experiencing pain in the back of the head can be concerning. This type of head pain has several potential causes:

  • Occipital neuralgia – Irritation or damage to the occipital nerves which run from the top of the spine to the scalp can cause burning, shocking, or stabbing pain.
  • Tension headache – Muscle tightness or strain in the neck and scalp muscles can refer pain to the back of the head.
  • Cervicogenic headache – Issues with the neck vertebrae or soft tissues can trigger head pain.
  • Migraine headache – Some migraines present with neck and occipital pain.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of pain in the back of the head include:

  • Aching, throbbing, stabbing, or shooting pain
  • Pain originating in the neck or back of head
  • Soreness in the scalp
  • Pain that comes and goes
  • Tenderness of the neck and scalp

Treatments

  • Over-the-counter pain medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • Hot/cold compresses
  • Massage therapy
  • Stretching and postural exercises
  • Prescription medications for neuralgia or migraines
  • Occipital nerve blocks
  • Physical therapy
  • Stress reduction techniques

Seeking treatment can both alleviate pain and help identify the underlying cause.

Types of Headache

Beyond the general tension headache, headaches come in many types with different symptoms and treatments. Some key types of headaches include:

  1. Migraine
    • Characteristics – Moderate to severe pain, worsened by activity. Usually on one side. May have nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light/sound. Can occur with aura.
    • Treatment Options – OTC pain meds, triptans, anti-nausea meds, preventative meds
  2. Cluster
    • Characteristics – Excruciating, piercing pain on one side of the head around the eye. Pain occurs in episodes. May have eye tearing, nasal congestion, or facial sweating on side of pain.
    • Treatment Options – Oxygen, triptans, preventative meds. Lifestyle changes.
  3. Sinus
    • Characteristics – Deep, dull ache around sinuses. Generally caused by sinus congestion or infection. Pain/pressure worsens with sudden head movement or straining. May have runny nose, fever.
    • Treatment Options – OTC pain meds, decongestants, antihistamines, antibiotics. Saline irrigation.
  4. Exertional
    • Characteristics – Throbbing pain from exercising in hot conditions. Usually goes away with rest. Dehydration often a factor.
    • Treatment Options – Rest and hydration. Prevention via proper preparation.
  5. Rebound
    • Characteristics – Frequent headaches caused by overuse of pain medication.
    • Treatment Options – Gradually weaning off overused pain medication. Preventative treatment.

Causes

Headaches arise from many different causes including genetics, environmental triggers, medications, head injuries or other medical disorders, and lifestyle factors like irregular sleep or poor posture. Determining the root cause can guide treatment to best prevent and relieve symptoms.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Keeping a headache diary noting frequency, location, severity and associated symptoms helps diagnose the type. Consulting a doctor helps rule out serious causes and guides appropriate treatment which may involve:

  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Prescription preventative or abortive medications
  • Complementary therapies like biofeedback, massage, acupuncture
  • Lifestyle adjustments related to stress, diet, exercise or sleep habits

Most headaches can be successfully managed through an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan. Tracking details about your headaches helps optimize relief efforts. Don't hesitate to seek medical advice for persistent, worsening or unusual headache pain.
