Rising Tide of Truck Accidents: Unveiling Florida’s Growing Safety Concerns

Trucks are vital to the economy, helping move goods between manufacturers and consumers. However, when handled recklessly, big rigs can endanger the lives of other motorists, given their large size.

In Florida, truck accidents have shot up, raising concerns about the underlying factors contributing to this alarming trend. In just one year, fatal truck accidents have increased by over 4 percent. Additionally, from 2010, road users who have died and been injured in crashes involving 18-wheelers are up 36 percent and 96 percent, respectively.

To help you stay safe on the roads, this article discusses the surge in truck accidents in Florida and what you can do to protect yourself.

How Florida’s Transformation into a Transportation and Logistics Hub Has Made the Roads Dangerous

Central Florida has transformed remarkably into a vital hub for transportation and logistics. This has been primarily driven by its strategic geographical position and a network of key highways. These arterial roads, including I-4, I-75, Highway 27, and Highway 41, intersect at the heart of the state, earning Central Florida the fitting moniker of the “Heartland.”

Moreover, establishing the Central Florida Intermodal Logistics Center near Winter Haven further solidifies the area’s pivotal role. This center has catalyzed the growth of warehousing and logistics facilities, propelling the local economy forward.

However, as with any rapid development, the growth in the logistics sector has introduced its set of challenges. The highways that crisscross Central Florida remain largely unchanged regarding their number of lanes over the past seven to eight years. That has led to traffic congestion, putting pressure on the infrastructure and heightening the risk of accidents.

Measures and Solutions

While no recent legislative actions have been reported, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) terms the rising trend of truck accidents as urgent. The 2019 FDOT study “Large Truck Crash for Freight Mobility and Safety Enhancement in Florida” shed light on the issue.

Analyzing data from 2007 to 2016, the study highlighted the prevalence of driver error as the leading cause of crashes (92%), with vehicle defects and road conditions accounting for about 3% each. It also identified high-crash density locations, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address these dangerous spots. With this data, the state can better manage and alleviate the issue.

Immediate Steps for Truck Accident Victims

In the aftermath of a truck accident, swift action is vital. First, prioritize your safety by seeking medical attention timely, regardless of the severity of your injuries. Then, contact the authorities to create an official accident report, a crucial piece of evidence.

Documenting the scene by taking photos of the accident, vehicles, and conditions is also crucial. Do not forget to gather contact and insurance information from all parties involved and witnesses’ details.

“One step that truck accident victims should approach carefully is reporting the crash to their insurance company. One must state accurate information but avoid giving recorded statements until consulting a legal expert,” says,” says attorney Christopher Keller of Keller, Melchiorre & Walsh.

The Need for a Truck Accident Lawyer

Given the complexities of truck accidents, enlisting the services of a skilled Florida truck accident lawyer is essential. These legal professionals possess the expertise to navigate intricate regulations, assess the extent of damages, and advocate for your rights effectively. A lawyer can ensure that critical evidence is preserved, handle communications with insurance companies, and strategize for potential legal actions.
