How to Apply for a National Stock Exchange IPO: A Step-by-Step Guide

The NSE IPO may attract many Indian investors because the National Stock Exchange plays an important role in India’s financial market. However, applying for an IPO involves more than filling a form.

Mistakes in PAN details, bank information, lot size or payment approval can affect the application. Understanding the process can help investors avoid common errors.

How an IPO Application Works

An initial public offering, or IPO, allows investors to apply for shares before they are listed on a stock exchange. Once the issue closes, shares are allotted according to the applicable rules.

Applying does not guarantee shares. If demand exceeds availability, some investors may not receive shares. Allotted shares are credited to the demat account before listing. If no shares are allotted, the blocked amount is released.

Keep Your Accounts Ready

Before applying, make sure the required details are correct.

RequirementPurpose
PANIdentifies the investor
Bank accountBlocks the application amount
Trading accountGives access to IPO applications through a broker
Demat accountReceives allotted shares
UPI IDHelps approve the payment mandate

The name, PAN and bank details should match the records linked with the demat account. A mismatch may cause verification problems or rejection.

Step 1: Check the IPO Dates

First, confirm the NSE IPO date and schedule. Use sources such as the offer document, exchange announcements, registrar updates or a broker platform.

Check:

  • Opening and closing dates
  • Price band
  • Lot size
  • Minimum application amount
  • Retail investor limit
  • Allotment date
  • Expected listing date

Applications are accepted only during the issue period. Some platforms may stop earlier, so avoid waiting until the last minute.

Step 2: Read the Important IPO Details

The offer document can be long, but investors should read important sections.

Review the business, financial performance, risk factors, legal matters and issue structure. Also check whether the IPO includes a fresh issue, an offer for sale or both.

In an offer for sale, existing shareholders sell their shares, and the company does not receive that money. Understanding the structure helps investors decide based on information rather than a familiar name.

Step 3: Open the IPO Section

You can apply through a broker app, trading website or a bank’s ASBA facility.

Log in, open the IPO section and find the NSE issue. Select the correct investor category. Most individuals use the retail category if their application stays within the prescribed limit.

For UPI applications, make sure the UPI ID is active and linked to the correct bank account.

Step 4: Select the Lot Size and Bid Price

IPO applications are made in fixed lots. Each lot contains a specified number of shares. You can apply for more lots within your category limit.

Retail investors may also choose the cut-off price, which means they agree to apply at the final issue price.

Before submitting, check the lot size, bid amount, category, PAN, bank details and UPI ID.

Step 5: Approve the Payment Mandate

After submission, a payment mandate request is sent to the selected UPI app. The amount is generally blocked in the bank account until allotment is completed.

Open the UPI app, verify the amount and approve the mandate before it expires. Without approval, the application may not be valid. For ASBA applications, the required amount is blocked directly by the bank.

Step 6: Check the Allotment

After the IPO closes, applications are reviewed, and allotments are finalised. Investors can check the NSE IPO allotment status through the registrar, broker platform, exchange links or bank updates.

If shares are allotted, they are credited to the demat account before listing. If there is no allotment, the blocked amount is released. The bank may take some time to remove the block.

Step 7: Plan for Listing Day

Plan what you want to do after listing. Some investors may sell for gains, while others may hold the shares.

Your decision should depend on your investment goal, holding period, and comfort with price movements. Share prices may move sharply on listing day, so avoid rushed decisions based only on short-term movement.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Here are some mistakes you must avoid when applying for an IPO:

  • Entering incorrect PAN or bank details
  • Forgetting to approve the UPI mandate
  • Making multiple applications with the same PAN
  • Ignoring the offer document
  • Assuming allotment is guaranteed
  • Borrowing money only for listing gains
  • Applying without understanding the issue terms

Final Thoughts

Applying for the NSE IPO can be straightforward if you handle each step carefully. Keep the required accounts ready, confirm the schedule and understand the issue details before applying.

Enter the bid correctly, approve the payment mandate on time and track the allotment after the issue closes. Once the shares are listed, make a decision based on your investment goals and comfort with market risk.
